Pre electoral: presidential and legislative elections in Honduras
Next Sunday general elections will take place in Honduras, where the president will be elected and the 128 seats that make up the National Congress for the period 2022-2026 will be renewed. The election will be polarized between two candidates: Nasry Asfura for the ruling party Partido Nacional and Xiomara Castro for the opposition party Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre, in Spanish). In the last polls Castro emerged as the favorite to win the race, but the behavior of the high number of undecided voters could turn the election in another direction. After the controversial 2017 elections that brought the current president Juan Orlando Hernández to power, Honduras is approaching what is expected to be a tense election day, amid increasing violence coupled with public distrust in government and, especially, the country’s electoral institution.
